Eastern Evening News - 31 January 2007:

A Norwich playgroup which has been run by volunteers for more than 40 years has received top marks in its government inspection.

Sprowston Nursery Playgroup's teaching and learning at nursery education level is "outstanding", as is its day care for younger children, according to the Ofsted inspection. The playgroup, run by a voluntary committee of 12 members and parents, operates from rooms at Sprowston Methodist Church, in Wroxham Road. Mathematical concepts are taught through play and children are encouraged to have an interest in stories and books. Inspectors praised the excellent resources which enhanced learning and helped children to develop independence and confidence.

The report said: "Children are developing very good communication skills. They chatter happily as they play, respond to questions and often express their ideas clearly. All make notes and practise early writing skills freely and many are writing their name legibly and with confidence."

Carol Tyrrell, chairman of the playgroup's committee, said: "The staff work hard. They are all very dedicated and committed to the job and it has paid off because it's a fantastic report. It's really all down to them." The report said: "Children's safety and welfare is a priority for the staff. They work hard to create a warm and welcoming environment, setting out furniture and a range of interesting activities ready for the children to arrive. Consequently, children settle quickly and start playing with enthusiasm."

Inspectors had no recommendations for improvement because the quality and standards of care were outstanding in every section.
